The thought piece that changed it all! And the legacy of my father.
in 1994, the Harvard Business Review released “Beyond Strategy to Purpose.”
My father, Merv Symes, took this concept and turned it into reality, using it to guide a multi-billion-dollar organization through significant change.
His approach wasn’t just about implementing modern management systems; it was about answering fundamental questions:
• Who are we as an organization?
• What do we stand for beyond profits?
• How do we align today’s decisions with tomorrow’s legacy?
This philosophy became the foundation of Symplicity Designs, where we’ve since helped 500+ organizations connect strategy to execution through purpose-driven leadership. I’m proud to continue that mantra with Mary Beth Tingley, MA, CPHR, Chris Johnston, and Mark Symes.
Purpose isn’t a statement on a wall—it’s a unifying force that aligns vision, culture, and values into meaningful action.
My father’s legacy taught me that the most significant transformations happen when leaders connect strategy to a deeper “why.” It’s about creating cultures where everyone, from the front line to the boardroom, feels part of something bigger.
And to do that requires constant dogmatic connection between purpose – strategy – process – structure – people – systems.
It comes alive in that order. You cannot do it well without articulating your purpose. You can not live it without cascading it to the people and systems that support your business.
To fellow leaders: What drives your organization beyond strategy? Have you defined a purpose that truly resonates? As the pace of change accelerates, these questions become increasingly crucial—not just for business success, but for the impact we choose to have.
To all the leaders out there, I see you! Keep clarifying, keep going!
To my Dad – Thank you! You have changed so many lives. And I count myself increasingly lucky to have had your influence on this journey.
