The Power of Your Values

april 14 2

Your values show up where you are intentional about integrating them.

In the age of AI – as we move closer to a synthetic and digital existence – more than ever before, you must be choose the values that will guide you.

Your community and the social norms that came with it, use to drive a set of values into the group.

The power of the church or the nation over our conduct has eroded – for good and bad.

Instead of the environment curating a set of societal values, we are left to do so for the people in our charge – professionally and personally.

It is why Emily Dugas and I have our family values hanging in the entry way: The G-Force: Grit, Growth, Gratitude, Goals, Gains, Generosity, and Grace. It is a reminder of how we want to show up. And north start in times of internal and external conflict.

Because as Adam Grant so poignantly put it “Reaching your goals is not success if you compromise your values along the way…”

Robert Glazer crystallized the fundamental importance of values when he said “It turns out that values are far more effective than rules at eliciting the outcomes and behaviors that we want. In either a family or an organization, it is virtually impossible to cover all possible rules or monitor the adherence to them.”

Every successful personal and professional transformation that I’ve read about or experienced is anchored in three simultaneous statements:

1. The Vision: The North Star we’re headed toward
2. The Values: The Behaviours that we agree to uphold
3. The Clear Goals: the Tangible Outputs we are chasing

And in a world of upheaval: Economic uncertainty, global security in flux, and AI disrupting the way we derive our internal value and the way we provide for those we love…

We must transform.

AI can enable you.

It can’t direct you.

That’s your job.

I love this line from Zack Kass in his book:

“In an age of Unmetered Intelligence, this is how to make an advantage out of uncertainty. Abandon nostalgia, redesign systems toward the vision, let every change pull you closer to the mission, and at all times align yourself with authentic values.”
