No nation is perfect.
We are a tapestry of moments.
Kind of like an individual. You are not your worst moment (though it is tempting to continue to dwell on those unfortunate points). You are also not your best moment.
But we can aspire.
To be what we sometimes are.
To become what we were only for a few moments last year. For more moments this year.
While Social Media monopolizes our attention and make us less content with our own incredible lot in life. And AI atrophies our critical thinking capabilities. And divisive politics eat away at this incredible experiment called democracy.
All that is happening.
And in that we get to choose our own pathways.
Mine is to believe, once again, in this mixmash of people and cultures called Canada.
There aren’t many places on earth that have figured out the whole picture quite as robustly as we have.
The “elbows up” movement has radically changed my buying habits. I buy my books at chapters and my groceries cart is filled with Canadian brands. It has become a rallying cry. One I’m happy to support.
This is not naive nationalism. It is a conscious and educated choice to buy into the best of our nation.
I’m proud of Canada at its best.
So that it can be that more often is worth believing in.
Worth investing in.
Worth celebrating.
Today, and every day, I’m making that investment.
